Hypaspace formed around Berklee College of Music in late 2000. They have since toured the United States and Canada, while releasing four studio albums and performing original instrumental rock that will kick your ass!
Steve Marchena (guitar) graduated magna cum laude from Berklee College of Music in 2000, where he majored in guitar performance. Upon graduation, he was a founding member of the classical guitar chamber ensemble The Back Bay Guitar Trio, which featured two of his former teachers. Together, they released two studio albums, and toured as far as Europe. In addition to Back Bay Guitar Trio performances, Steve also began touring with the instrumental rock group Hypaspace, with whom he released four studio albums in the space of a decade. In the year 2004, Steve won the first four rounds of Guitar Center’s famous competition, “Guitarmageddon”. He has since returned to Berklee as a featured artist, and also as an instructor during their popular summer program, “Guitar Week”. Steve went on to receive the “Outstanding Arts Instructor Award” from Bentley University in Waltham, MA, where he served for four years as artist-in-residence. He has performed with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and the Metropolitan Chorale, and has shared the stage with Al di Meola, Nuno Bettencourt, Harvey Reid, J. Matt Hain (bass) began playing bass at the age of 9, when his friends needed a bass player for their garage band. He instantly fell in love with the instrument. Matt began his studies under the late Merik Kocandrle, former professor at Berklee College of Music. In high school he played upright bass in jazz band and orchestra. Matt attended the bass guitar summer program at Berklee College of Music for several years. He was the co-founder of the Worcester, MA, based experimental funktastic rock band, Sandal Machine Foot, with whom he toured throughout the United States in the late 2000’s and released three studio albums. Matt is currently the newest addition to the progressive instrumental rock band Hypaspace.
Penny Larson (drums) is a founding member of Hypaspace, with whom she has released four studio albums and toured the United States and Canada. The daughter of drummer George Sweeney, Penny first picked up the sticks at the age of three. After several years studying and performing in marching percussion and drum set settings, she began teaching at sixteen and has been teaching drum set ever since. She attended Berklee College of Music and has studied with Vance Gordon, Skip Hadden, Ed Kaspik, Dave Weckl, Billy Cobham, and many others. Penny has been a drum set instructor at DiCenso’s Drum Shop since 2001, and Strike Up the Band since 2012. Penny’s past performances include a diverse list of artists beyond Hypaspace, including The Steve Marchena Jazz Experience, TALZTOP, Jon Finn, Bryan McPherson, Scott Tarulli, Joe Feloni, Ed Broms, Bob Moses, John Mason, Sex and Witchcraft, The Humungusfungusamungus, Hollowpoint, PLP, Kids Against Combs, The New Group, and Adam Payne.
